The 5 Sewing Tools I Can’t Live Without (Beginner-Friendly & Affordable!)
If you’re just starting your sewing journey, it can be overwhelming to figure out which tools you actually need and which ones will just sit in a drawer collecting dust.
Over the years, I’ve tested out a lot of sewing gadgets. These five are my personal tried-and-true basics I reach for in almost every single project. They’re beginner-approved, budget-friendly and honestly just make sewing easier and more enjoyable.

1. Seam Ripper
Let’s be real, mistakes happen. I have no shame in admitting that a seam ripper is one of my most-used tools. With this tool, I’m not necessarily focused on quality, but quantity. The amount of time I spend looking for a seam ripper I set down somewhere adds so much unnecessary stress to my projects.
My advice? Buy a few. I keep one by my sewing machine, one at my ironing board and one next to my chair. That way, there’s always one within reach.

2. Measuring Tape
Accurate measurements are the foundation of good sewing. Measuring tapes stretch and warp over time, so it’s a good idea to check and replace them regularly. I like keeping extras on hand, safely tucked away in their packaging until I need them.
This is another tool I keep multiples of. I use them constantly for body measurements, pattern adjustments and even checking grainlines. A good rule of thumb: make sure they’re at least 60″ long.

3. Water-Soluble Marking Pen
I go back and forth between water-soluble pens and tailor’s chalk. Tailor’s chalk is great for dark fabrics, but it’s not as precise. I like to have both in my toolkit, but for accuracy, water-soluble pens win every time.
I use this on nearly every project. It’s perfect for marking notches, darts, buttonholes, pleats and more. Always test these on a scrap piece of fabric, but in my experience, these work well on a wide variety of materials.

4. Fabric Scissors
There is nothing worse than trying to cut fabric with dull or cheap scissors. Quality really matters here. I actually have three pairs of the same scissors, and one of them I’ve had since I was a freshman in high school (and yes, they’re still going strong over a decade later!)
If they ever start to dull, you can always sharpen them too. Investing in a sharp pair of fabric-only scissors will save you so much frustration.

5. Tube Turner
This one’s a game changer if you’re sewing straps, ties, belts or anything that needs to be turned right-side out. I held off on getting one for so long, and honestly, I have no idea why. It’s hands down one of my best sewing purchases, and it’s under $5.
Seriously, get one! It’s one of those small tools that makes a big difference, and once you have one, you won’t want to sew without it.
