Week 4: Tailored Tie Sew-Along
Share
It is the final week of the Tailored Tie Sew-Along! This week is all about hand-stitching, so get your needle and thread ready. This is my favorite part of the sew-along, because I just find hand-stitching so relaxing. I can do it from the comfort of my recliner in front of the TV. It doesn't get better than that!
1) Supplies and Sewing Tips
Supplies:
-The Tailored Tie we sewed together last week
-Cut Out Heavy-Weight Interfacing
-Hand-stitching Needle
-Thread
-Fabric Scissors
-Iron & Ironing Board
Sewing Tips:
First, we'll insert the the heavy-weight interfacing into the tie behind the lining. Don't worry about making it fit perfectly, it's just a filler to give your tie a little bit more stability.
Again, this week I won't be going in to extreme detail since you have the video tutorial that comes with your pattern, but I will be going into some sewing tips as well as how to do the slip-stitch to finish your tie.
Tip 1: Be careful not to touch the fusible interfacing with your iron while folding under the edges of your fabric
Tip 2: Take big stitches while stitching the tie together, it adds flexibility to the tie. Also, don’t pull the stitches extremely tight.
Tip 3: Make sure you don’t sew through the front of your fabric
Tip 4: Press your tie for a clean finish.
Slip Stitch:The slip-stitch is a must-know stitch that can be used for much more than just your Tailored Tie. It is also known as the ladder stitch and can be used for mending toys/garments without visible stitches, hemming garments, or, of course, finishing your Tailored Tie. In the video below, I'm using an infinity scarf, because you can see the threads better. If you want to see it done on the actual Tailored Tie, head on over to minute 8:40 in the video that comes along with the Tailored Tie pattern. You'll use the slip stitch to sew your tie together and to sew the keeper loop in place.
Don't forget to press your tie when you're finished for a clean and crisp look!
Happy Sewing,
