Week 3: Tailored Tie Sew-Along

Week 3: Tailored Tie Sew-Along

Week 3 of the Tailored Tie Sew-Along has arrived!  We've already done all the prep work, and now we can begin sewing.  Who's ready to bust out the machine and start sewing?  This is the only week we'll be using our sewing machine, so if you're new to using a sewing machine we'll get through it together.

1) Supplies and Tips for Sewing

Supplies:

-The fabric we cut out last week (main fabric with interfacing fused to it and lining fabric - we'll wait until next week to use the heavyweight interfacing)

-Sewing Machine

-Thread

-Iron & Ironing Board

-Fabric Scissors

-Ribbon

-Pins

Sewing Tips:

Just like last week, I'm not going into extreme detail on the sewing process since it's outlined in the instructions that come with your Tailored Tie Pattern.  Remember there's also a link to a video tutorial on page 2 of your pattern.  You can reference (minute 3:15) if you're confused about any part of the written instructions.

Tip 1: Make sure to sew with right-sides together.

Tip 2: Press your fabric.  This makes such a difference in the quality of your project.

Tip 3: Don't get upset if you mess up.  There's this magic little tool called a seam ripper.  It's basically like the undo button on your computer.  It takes a little more time if you have to use it, but if you make a mistake sewing, it's fixable.

Sewing the Tie

There are a few areas of sewing that may be confusing, so I'm going into detail on those in this video.  I've broken it down into parts, so see below if you're struggling with sewing any part of the Tailored Tie.

  • Sewing the main tie pieces: 3:03
  • Sewing the lining: 3:40
  • Sewing the keeper loop: 5:11

Sewing Machines

Not all sewing machines are the same, so I didn't go into detail on how to use the sewing machine.  If you have questions on how to use your specific machine, send me an email at shoptailoredtrends@gmail.com and I'd be more than willing to help you out.

Next week we'll be finishing up our tie with some hand stitching, so stay tuned!

Happy Sewing,
