Seamless Scrunchies

If you haven't noticed, the patterns I have in my Pattern Shop leave a lot of excess fabric.  I rarely throw unused fabric away, so my scrap pile is beginning to grow out of control.  Since elastic is finally back in stock, I'm able to make my long awaited scrunchie pattern.  Scrunchies have been making a comeback in the past few years, and my hair is finally long enough to hop on the scrunchie train!  I created a free Seamless Scrunchie Pattern where you can learn to make your own scrunchies.  I've included some commonly asked questions below, as well as ways to manipulate the pattern to make it your own.

What are the best fabrics to use?

Honestly, you can make a scrunchie out of just about any fabric.  Woven cottons are going to be the easiest to sew with, so those are great to start with if you're new to sewing.  Plus, they're readily available just about anywhere that sells fabric.  Silks and velvets make make for more sophisticated scrunchies (lol is that even a thing?), but are more difficult to sew with.  If you want to try sewing with new or more difficult fabrics, this is a great pattern to start with.  It has very little commitment and doesn't need to be perfect.  I'm personally using polyester/spandex knits for mine, since that's what the majority of my scraps consist of.

How can I adjust the size?

The dimensions I use for my scrunchies are 4" by 20", but this is just a base.  I would consider this to be the 'average' scrunchie, but with just a few easy tweaks, you can make this scrunchie to your liking by:

  • Making a fuller scrunchie: All you have to do is increase the length of the fabric to more than 20".
  • Making a smoother scrunchie: Use less fabric (so any length less than 20").
  • Making a fluffier scrunchie:  Increase the width of the fabric to more than 4".
  • Making a narrow scrunchie:  Decrease the width of the fabric to less than 4".  Be careful not to make it too skinny or you'll have a tough time turning the scrunchie right-side-out.

You can use a combination of any of the above methods to make the Seamless Scrunchie to your personal liking.
