Parts of a Necktie

Parts of a Necktie

Before I patterned the Tailored Tie, my knowledge of necktie terminology was basically nonexistent.  After making the pattern though, I'm beginning to feel like a pro.  If you're not caught up on the lingo yet, don't worry.  This guide is here to help you understand the different parts of a necktie.

A) Tipping: The tipping is the fabric on the back side of a tie.  It can be the same color as the main fabric, or a complementary color for a hidden pop of excitement.  This is also referred to as the tie lining.
B) Blade:  This is the main, lower section of the tie.  The blade is the widest part of the tie and is visible when worn.
C) Keeper: The keeper is an extra piece of fabric sewn to the back of the tie.  The purpose of the keeper is to hold the tail in place when worn.  This way, the tail stays hidden behind the blade.
D) Seam:  The seams connect the different pieces of the tie.  The seams are hidden when the tie is worn properly.
E) Neck:  This is the middle section of the tie.  It's the part that goes around your neck.
F) Tail: The tail is the narrow end of the tie.  It is tucked into the keeper and hidden behind the blade when worn.

Now that you're familiar with all the parts of a tie, you're much more prepared to take on the Tailored Tie Sew-Along beginning on November 3rd.  You can find the pattern in the Pattern Shop, and in case you missed it, all of my patterns are 10% off through the month of October.  Use the code TAILOREDTIE at checkout.  In the meantime, make sure to join the Tailored Trends Facebook group and let me know what questions you have about the upcoming sew-along.

Happy Sewing,
