Meet the Willow Tank

The Willow Tank is live in the Pattern Shop! My inspiration for this project came to me when I was shopping around Christmas time.  I found a rib knit tank with flutter sleeves, but opted not to get it.  I couldn't get it out of my head though and when I went online to try to get it, lo and behold, it was sold out.  Bummer, right? Wrong!  Insert my sewing super power.  I was able to whip up a similar tank for myself, just the way I wanted it.  Below I'm outlining the different project features, the project difficulty, my personal fabric recommendations and a FAQ.

Project Features

The Willow Tank is a great addition to your spring wardrobe. The high neckline offers a modest yet modern look, perfect for the winter to spring transitional period. The flirty half circle sleeves make this top easy to dress up or down. This tank is form fitting around the torso, with loose sleeves for that pop of fun.

Project Difficulty

This is truly a beginners project for those learning to sew with knits.  You'll learn how to attach sleeves on the flat (which just means you'll sew the sleeves to the shirt before you sew the side seams), how to attach a neckband and how to hem knit fabric. If you're nervous to sew with stretch fabric, this is a great introduction to sewing with knits.

Fabric Recommendations

Rib knits are my number one recommendation for this project. They have the most stretch and great retention, which is necessary for a form fitting garment with a high neckline, like the Willow Tank.  Because this is form fitting, medium-weight fabrics work best.  Anything lighter might stretch too much and cause the finished tank to be see-through.  For my sample, I used a modal/polyester rib knit.  It has great elasticity and a super soft feel, making it very comfortable to wear.

FAQ

Can I make this using my home sewing machine?
Of course! The pattern instructions include directions for using both a serger and a home sewing machine. Just make sure your home sewing machine is capable of sewing a zig-zag stitch.

What is included with this pattern?
When you purchase this pattern, you will receive a digital copy of the Willow Tank pattern and the instructions. The pattern instructions include written and illustrated directions that are easy to follow.

What if I don’t know how to use digital sewing patterns?
Don’t you worry. I have a detailed video explaining the process of downloading and printing digital sewing patterns. It’s way easier than you may think.

I’m still new to sewing, will this be too difficult for me?
There’s no time like the present to learn a new skill. While this might take you a little longer than the estimated time, it’s definitely doable for those new to sewing. This project is perfect for a beginner seamstress wanting to learn to sew with knits. It will teach you valuable skills when it comes to creating your own clothing. If you’ve never sewn before or still aren't confident in your sewing skills, I suggest you check out some of the patterns in the Free Content Shop. These are much smaller projects and more manageable to begin with while you learn to use your sewing machine.
