Meet the Nova T-Shirt Dress

I'm so excited to finally introduce you to the Nova T-Shirt Dress.  I first drafted this dress a couple of years ago and went through a few variations before I got the style exactly where I wanted it.  This is my go-to dress for just about any occasion.  I currently have three of these dresses hanging in my closet if that tells you how much I love it!

This is a digital pattern with two different variations: one with pockets and the other without pockets.

Pocket Variation:

The pocket variation adds great functionality to the dress that give it a more casual, laid back appearance.  However, the pockets do take more time to produce, which increases the difficulty and time spent making the dress.  I think they're totally worth it though!

No-Pocket Variation:

The no-pocket variation gives the dress a more streamline appearance by decreasing bulk in the hip area.  If you want to avoid adding extra volume to the hip area, choose to forgo the pockets.  By not including the pockets, the dress takes less time and is simpler to make.

Project Features

Some of my favorite features on this dress include the relaxed fit and the short sleeves.  It fits just like a t-shirt, except in dress form.  I also love the pocket option.  I always feel so weird when I don't have a place to put my hands, so pockets are a must for me.  In my opinion, the best part about making this dress yourself is choosing whatever type of fabric you want.

Project Difficulty

The set-in sleeves and neckband are what make the Nova T-Shirt Dress an intermediate project.  Sewing along the curves of the neckline or in circles around the armhole aren't always the easiest for beginners.  However, if you are interested in trying out these skills, this pattern is a great opportunity to practice and learn, especially if you've worked with knits before.  Working with knits leaves lots of room for error because they're stretchy and can hide mistakes easily.  The dress also isn't form fitting, so there's no need for perfect sewing skills.  The step-by-step instructions include illustrated, written, and video instructions that you can follow along with.  Below I've listed some skills you can expect to learn while making this dress:

  1. How to sew side seam pockets
  2. How to sew a neckband
  3. How to sew set-in sleeves

If you're not into sewing, we currently have a limited selection of Nova T-Shirt Dresses in the clothing shop, but more are on the way based on high demand!
