Meet the Jillian Tee

I'm so excited to finally introduce you to the Jillian Tee.  This has been on my to-do list for a few months now, and I finally have it just right.  This is my go-to tee for a casual day out.  I'm not one to dress up on the week days, but this tee gets me out of my high school t-shirts and into something a little more age appropriate (can anyone relate?).

Below I'm outlining the different style variations, the project features, and the project difficulty.  For those of you non-sewers, I've also added a limited amount of pre-made Jillian Tees to the Clothing Shop.

Variation 1:

I'm planning to wear this variation once legging season rolls around.  The length is perfect for leggings, and I even like wearing it with my skinny jeans.  The side slit keeps the the tee loose around the hips.

Variation 2:

This has to be my favorite of all three variations.  The length is just a little longer than a unisex t-shirt, but the fit is just as relaxed.  I live in t-shirts during the summer, so the rolled cuff and pocket make me feel like I'm at least putting a little effort into my appearance while staying comfortable.

Variation 3:

This final variation is the simplest of the three.  The straight hem without the side slit makes this variation great for beginner seamstress'.  It has the same silhouette as the other variations, it's just a little less time consuming to make.

Project Features

Some of my favorite features on this tee include the relaxed fit and the short sleeves.  It fits just like a t-shirt, except without the armhole seam.  I also love the pocket option and rolled sleeves.  In my opinion, the best part about making this tee yourself is choosing whatever type of fabric you want and what style features you want to include.  The possibilities are endless when you make it yourself!

Project Difficulty

The neckband is what makes the Jillian Tee an intermediate project.  Sewing along the curve of the neckline isn't always the easiest for beginners.  However, if you are interested in trying out this skill, this pattern is a great opportunity to practice and learn, especially if you've worked with knits before.  Working with knits leaves lots of room for error because they're stretchy and can hide mistakes easily.  The tee also isn't form fitting, so there's no need for perfect sewing skills.  The step-by-step instructions include illustrated, written, and video instructions that you can follow along with.  Below I've listed some skills you can expect to learn while making this tee:

  1. How to sew a patch pocket
  2. How to sew a neckband
  3. How to sew a split hem
